Sydney’s recommended surgeon for expert liposuction procedures

At Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Australia, Dr Tew offers a range of body treatments to enhance your appearance and increase overall body confidence. From contouring your body to achieve a more desirable shape, to removing pockets of fat for a more streamlined appearance, there are various options to choose from.

For anyone who wants a flatter stomach, a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is ideal, as it can effectively remove an excess of skin and fat to correct a large abdomen. It can also tighten up the underlying muscles, improving the look even more.

There are many reasons why patients choose to have a tummy tuck. The most common concerns of patients requesting a tummy tuck are:

  • Feelings of self-consciousness, embarrassment or shyness about their abdominal appearance
  • Inability to exercise, play sport or lose weight as a result of abdominal size
  • Difficulty in buying clothing due to imbalance in body proportions
  • Rashes below the abdomen
  • Back discomfort or pain

Men and women can both benefit from this procedure. The best candidates for a tummy tuck are patients who are in good shape, but with loose abdominal skin. If there is a large fat accumulation on the abdominal wall, liposculpture may be required as a primary procedure before the tummy tuck to remove the fatty layer.

    The procedure

Dr Tew will tighten the vertical muscles in your stomach by pulling them close together and stitching them into position. The most common technique used involves an incision made across the lower abdomen, extending to the hip on each side. Extra skin and fat is also removed and Dr Tew performs all abdominoplasty under general anaesthetic.

It is important to realise that a tummy tuck is not a replacement for weight loss. Tummy tuck surgery results are long-lasting however they may not be permanent as your lifestyle choices may greatly affect results.

Liposuction is a procedure designed to re-shape the body by removing unwanted pockets of fat to create a more sculpted look. There are some fat deposits which you may find almost impossible to get rid of, no matter how vigorous your exercise routine. Liposuction is used to remove this fat, which exercise and diet cannot.

Virtually any area of fat accumulation can be treated with liposuction, which is particularly effective in the flank and hip areas (love handles). Liposuction can also be used to reduce fatty deposits over the upper and lower abdomen and also in gynaecomastia (male breasts). Women most commonly wish to remove ‘saddlebags’ from their outer thighs, but treatment of buttocks, and knees are also commonly performed.

    The procedure

During surgery, tiny incisions are made at the site where fat is to be removed, and a solution is infused to provide anaesthesia, reduce bleeding and improve fat extraction. A small suction cannula is inserted under the skin into the fat layer, to extract fatty deposits. Dr Tew uses various sizes and dimensions of extraction cannulae, hollow, tubular instruments with holes at one end to trap the fat. Liposuction usually requires a general anaesthetic and is usually performed as a day only procedure.

The ideal candidate for liposuction is close to their ideal weight. This procedure is intended for changing body shape where fat deposits are unable to be shifted by conventional methods. A patient must also be in good medical condition to heal and resist infection. Liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss by proper diet and exercise.

Labiaplasty, or vaginal lip reduction, is an increasingly popular modern surgery which corrects deformities in a woman’s genitalia. Women are often embarrassed about this problem and may not realise that correction is possible.

Deformities of the labia majora (outer vaginal lips) or minora (inner vaginal lips) can be corrected very easily with this type of surgery. The labia forms part of the genitalia and many women can find it embarrassing if they feel the area is not ‘right’. Some women develop in this way during puberty, for others the problem occurs after childbirth. The most common concerns of women requesting labiaplasty are:

    • Painful intercourse
    • Childbirth distortion
    • Discomfort caused by protruding labia rubbing on clothing
    • Feelings of self-consciousness or embarrassment due to uneven or protruding labia
    • Discomfort caused by protruding labia when exercising, e.g. bike riding

Many women have uneven labia and this can also be corrected with labiaplasty. Most often the surgery is done to reduce the width of the labia minora.

      The procedure

Labiaplasty is a fairly simple procedure which can usually be done as day surgery. A small section of excess tissue is removed and the labia re-shaped to provide an even and aesthetically pleasing shape. Dissolvable stitches are used which do not need to be removed. This is a relatively non-invasive procedure and most patients experience minimal pain. The patient needs to avoid direct pressure on the area during the healing phase, which is about three weeks, although comfort and common sense still apply

If you have loose skin, no amount of exercise will tighten or improve its elasticity. A lower body lift can help to correct this by removing and tightening loose skin, although it’s not designed to remove a significant amount of fat.

Many patients who request a lower body lift have lost weight and have excess skin which needs to be tightened. An ideal candidate for a lower body lift is someone with loose, sagging skin but who is not overweight or obese.

      The procedure

During this procedure, the excess skin and some fat is removed and the remaining tissues are tightened. This may produce a more attractive body contour. Skin laxity and poor tone may also be related to the normal aging process, pregnancy, or significant weight loss.

A lower body lift differs from liposuction, as liposuction removes only fat. A lower body lift can tighten skin and improve cellulite but it should be made clear that this is a very serious surgical procedure. Following surgery, the patient will require two to three nights stay in hospital and afterwards, it is important to rest as you recuperate. Most patients will take two to three weeks off work to recover.

A body lift is usually performed along with liposuction , to remove any pockets of fat and to give the best overall result. It may also be combined with inner thigh lifts.
