Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a modern surgery and is becoming increasingly popular as more and more women hear about this procedure. Women are often embarrassed about this problem and may not realise that correction is possible.

A labiaplasty is also known as vaginal lip reduction. Deformities of the labia majora (outer vaginal lips)or minora (inner vaginal lips) can be corrected very easily with this type of surgery.

The labia forms part of the genitalia and many women can find it embarrassing if they feel the area is not ‘right’. Some women develop in this way during puberty, for others the problem occurs after childbirth. The most common concerns of women requesting Labiaplasty are:

  • Painful intercourse
  • Childbirth distortion
  • Discomfort caused by protruding labia rubbing on clothing
  • Feelings of self-consciousness or embarrassment due to uneven or protruding labia
  • Discomfort caused by protruding labia when exercising, e.g. bike riding

Many women have uneven labia, this can also be corrected with labiaplasty. Most often the surgery is done to reduce the width of the labia minora.

Labiaplasty is a fairly simple procedure which can usually be done as day surgery. A small section of excess tissue is removed and the labia re-shaped to provide an even and aesthetically pleasing shape. Dissolvable stitches are used which do not need to be removed. This is a relatively non-invasive procedure and most patients experience minimal pain. The patient needs to avoid direct pressure on the area during the healing phase which is about 3 weeks, although comfort and common sense still apply.

Women who are unhappy with the way their labia look often have self-esteem issues, which can affect their sexual relationships. Many patients who have undergone labiaplasty say that it has greatly improved their self-esteem and confidence.
