Breast enlargement surgery is also known as breast augmentation, breast implants or augmentation mammoplasty. Breast enlargement can increase the fullness of your breasts, as well as improve their balance and symmetry.
As one of the most requested surgeries within our practice, breast enlargement is a relatively straightforward procedure, with rapid recovery and almost immediate improvement confidence.
Some women undergo breast enlargement because:
The change in breast size does not need to be dramatic. Most of our patients want to achieve a natural look and we have a range of choices regarding the size and shape of breast implants. The implant type, size and shape will be determined not just on your desired increase in size, but also on your breast anatomy, skin elasticity and body type.
The procedure
Dr Tew will evaluate your health and discuss the surgical techniques most appropriate for you. This will be influenced by the size and shape of your breasts, skin tone and placement of your nipples. If you feel your breasts are sagging, Dr Tew may also recommend a breast lift to enhance your result.
Changing your breasts will not by itself change you. From experience, we have found that women, who are well informed and realistic about the surgery, are most pleased with the results.
Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, decreases breast size. It involves the removal of fat, tissue and skin from the breasts to bring them into proportion with the rest of the body. For women who are tired of enduring the discomfort of heavy breasts, reduction surgery can offer effective relief from back pain and many other issues.
The most common concerns of women requesting breast reductions are:
By correcting excessive breast weight, size and droopiness, the stress that large breasts place on the body is relieved following surgery. Better proportion can also be achieved while still preserving enough breast tissue to retain your femininity. This surgery has given many of our patients increased confidence and has improved their quality of life.
The procedure
A breast reduction usually also involves a breast lift and does leave permanent scars in locations normally covered by a bra or bathing suit. The scarring becomes less obvious over a period of six to 12 months.
A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, raises the position of the breasts and can be carried out in conjunction with breast enlargement surgery.
This surgery is chosen by women who are happy with the overall size of their breasts, but are unhappy with the loss of fullness. Moderately sagging breasts can be corrected with breast lift without the need for breast implants. A breast lift can:
The procedure
Breast lift surgery removes excess skin to raise the nipple and tighten the breast tissue. There are different types of breast lift available and we will choose the one best suited to your needs. This will depend on the shape and size of your breasts and the current position of your nipple/areola.
Similar to a breast reduction, a breast lift requires a number of incisions in the breast, tightening the muscles and tendons and removal of some breast tissue. There is moderate scarring. When the recovery period is over, your breasts will sit higher.
It is important to note that a breast lift does not significantly change the size of your breasts or give your breasts a rounder shape. If you would like your breasts to look fuller or smaller, you might need to consider either breast augmentation or breast reduction surgery.
Breast reconstruction is an operation to replace the breast after mastectomy (removal of a breast), or lumpectomy (removal of part of the breast).
Breast reconstruction surgery is a very important part of recovery for women who have had breast cancer. As well as aesthetic benefits, breast reconstruction allows women to return to an emotional state they enjoyed before their cancer diagnosis.
The procedure
It is possible to have breast reconstruction at the same time as the cancer operation, or many years later. During the surgery, the breast may be reconstructed with breast implants or your own tummy tissue (if this is the case, the patient has a ‘tummy tuck’ at the same time). It may be necessary for the other breast to be adjusted to give the best symmetrical result.
